Visiting the Land of Division — The Quiet Impact of Imjingak and Odusan Unification Observatory

The other day, my daughter wanted to take a friend visiting from overseas to Imjingak, so we went together. On the way back, we stopped by the Odusan Unification Observatory.

Both places powerfully remind visitors of the reality that the Korean Peninsula was divided along the 38th parallel, and that the same people now live in two completely different worlds in the North and the South. They are sites of strong interest not only for Koreans but also for international visitors.

That day at Imjingak, I even noticed some Japanese tourists. However, since access by public transportation is not very convenient for either location, they are better suited for more experienced travelers to Korea.

Unfortunately, North Korea cannot actually be seen from Imjingak, which was a bit disappointing. So on our way back, we stopped at the Odusan Unification Observatory, located just off the expressway.

At this observatory, both admission and the use of telescopes are free of charge. On that day, we were able to see North Korean residents walking while pushing their bicycles.

Although transportation is somewhat inconvenient, I highly recommend visiting if you have the opportunity.

Freedom Bridge

The bridge came to be known as “Freedom Bridge” after the 1953 Armistice Agreement, when more than 13,000 prisoners of war crossed it to return to the South, reportedly shouting “Long live freedom.”
