Discovering Gyeongju: A Journey Through Korea’s Ancient Capital
Gyeongju, the ancient capital located in southern Korea, is often called “a museum without walls,” a special place where over a thousand years of history live and breathe throughout the entire city.
Once the flourishing capital of the Silla Kingdom and a center where Buddhist culture blossomed, Gyeongju is home to countless historic treasures. Scattered across the area are lush royal tomb complexes, Cheomseongdae Observatory—an enduring symbol of ancient astronomy—and masterpieces of Silla art such as Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto, making it an irresistible destination for history enthusiasts.
The charm of Gyeongju lies not only in its status as an ancient city, but also in the way its historic sites naturally blend into the everyday landscape and local life. Simply walking through the city allows visitors to feel the breath of Silla from a thousand years ago.
A short distance from the city center, modern cafés and galleries harmoniously coexist with ancient scenery, creating a unique atmosphere where history and contemporary culture intersect in the most pleasant way.
In this article, I would like to introduce a particularly charming café in Gyeongju—one that you may want to stop by during your historical stroll. Be sure to add to your itinerary this serene space where the quiet elegance of the ancient capital meets modern sensibility.
The café featured here is Terarosa Gyeongju, a traditional hanok-style café located—surprisingly—right next to an ancient burial mound.
Terarosa’s flagship store is in Gangneung, which I have visited twice. It is a popular coffee brand with branches throughout the country.
First, take a look at the burial mounds visible from the café grounds.

Hwangnam-dong Tumuli Park
I get excited just looking at these ancient tombs, and being able to enjoy coffee with this view makes it all the more special.
On this day, not only the city but also the café itself was filled with tourists.
It is a highly recommended spot.
